Liverpool, known for the Beatles or for those who like it, also for football. Located at the mouth of the river Mersey on the Irish sea, Liverpool is a port city and European city of culture. I explored the city during a short stay as a certain festival called to me. Which one, find out!
From the airport into the city
Liverpool is best reached via Manchester Airport. From the airport, a National Express bus goes directly to central Liverpool in an hour. You can purchase the tickets conveniently online. Alternatively, you can take train, that leaves hourly, from the airport to Liverpool Lime Street.
Pets for breakfast
As a cat owner, we know that cat’s purr reduces stress and helps blood pressure. True, we found something for the feel-good factor on our trip. Furnished like a very cozy café, with a counter for self-service, many different sofas, and a few delicacies to eat, the Cat Café appears like a normal café. Only this café offers a reception where you can learn how to deal with the cats. And then: off to cat hunting. We made ourselves comfortable with our teas while a handful of cats were already walking around. These cute little tigers are very curious, but some are also sleepy.
Important: a spontaneous visit is possible, but since the number of visitors is limited, I recommend booking online in advance.
Shopping tour at Liverpool One
No city trip is complete without shopping! Is that also the case with you? Although I don't have to shop for hours, I'm always curious about the choice of shops. In Liverpool One alone, over 170 shops and restaurants await for your money. In the area around Church Street / Lord Street there are many well-known shops such as Marks & Spencer, Next, River Island, TK Maxx and Primark. A handful of them don't exist in Zurich.
Having lunch
I love Mexican food! Whether as margarita or fajita or any other unspeakable delicacy. We went to Wahaca Liverpool for that cause. Without reservation at noon was no problem, in the evening I recommend you reserve a table. If necessary, you can wait at the bar for a few minutes before your table gets free. Absolute plus point: there is an explicit question about allergies, which I rarely experience. That makes it easier and Pi, our waiter of the day had a few suggestions in store. We ordered a set menu for 2 people and shortly afterwards our table was filled with all sorts of goodies like tacos, fried vegetables, and pork balls. Unfortunately, I can't remember the names, but it was absolutely delicious!
After the delicious lunch, exercise was next on our list
We used the dry weather to take a walk to the docks. The Albert Docks are right on the water and invite you to explore with their countless attractions and restaurants. Highly recommended: Unicorn waffle at Puffle Waffle. Yes, it had a lot of calories and was super delicious. Here in the docks was the reason for our visit:
The Curve Fashion Festival
I followed the posts on social media from last year's festival for months and everyone spoke enthusiastically about it. I wanted to take a look at it myself, so I booked my short stay in Liverpool. Brands for oversize clothing and the shopping facilities in one place? Then it is worth a trip. The mood was very relaxed, and I was able to discover some familiar faces from the Instagram community. For some, I was too shy to speak to them. Because the first handful ladies were a little surprised/confused that I tapped on their shoulders and spoke to them. I'm still working on my stalker skills. The next festival will take place on March 27, 2021 and I will try to be there again (preferably spending more time in and around Liverpool). More information about the festival can be found here.
International dinner
We found Brazilian cuisine on Hanover Street at Bem Brasil Liverpool. An authentic “churrascaria,” the waiters were constantly walking around with skewers, fresh grilled meat on the run. A lid, your personal meat traffic light, signals to the waiters whether you want to feast further or not. Green means continue serving and red means you’ve had enough. There were different types of meat to choose from, the side dishes from the buffet. We really liked the grilled pineapple, it just smelled delicious after BBQ. Surprisingly, I was just too full for dessert. Little over €30 per person, despite "All you can eat", the price is very high, I thought. Even in Switzerland you can get cheaper dishes and similar experience.
Tip: Order the Raspberry Cooler as a cocktail.
Stay for the night
The Novotel Liverpool Center convinced us as an ideally located hotel. Less than 5 minutes’ walk into the pedestrian area of Liverpool and directly opposite the restaurant recommendation for your dinner. The hotel offers a pool (for relaxing moments after shopping) and a bar. We did not book breakfast. But used the possibility of luggage storage.
The bus and train stations are also only about 5 to 10 minutes away on foot.
