Switzerland - Schaffhausen

Be your own captain... at least for one night
Sleep on a yacht once in your life...or then just on a boat. It's totally possible without winning the lottery. Watching the ducks on the water with coffee in hand and enjoying the tranquility of a waking city. I found it...and here I tell you about it!

But if the yacht and boat are also not your own? Then it's time to book a hotel stay that's not available all year round.

The MS Konstanz, built in 1925, becomes a special kind of pop-up ship hotel for a few months a year. Your floating suite, so to speak. The suite is designed for 1-2 persons and is located in the middle of Schaffhausen. A city exploration as well as a morning walk starts directly at your front door. Or is it rather the ship's door?

The board program

On deck you can relax in a hanging chair and enjoy the offered bottle of wine. If the Güterhof restaurant is open, you can even treat yourself of a candlelight dinner directly on board. Since the aftermath of the lockdown was still being felt in early May and the restaurant was only open when the weather was nice, we couldn't book this. Instead, there was a trip to the nearby old town, where the Mexican entertained us.

Breakfast is included in the overnight rate, but this is available at the Sorell Hotel Rüden, about a 10 minute walk away through the old town.
We were a little early for breakfast and we were even offered that we could have waited in a room and indulge in a hot shower.

Things to do in Schaffhausen

I think the candlelight dinner on deck is a great idea. However, so close to the city I absolutely recommend to find a restaurant of your choise to walk in.
The adjacent restaurant Güterhof is already the 1st address to stop in.

Here are the top 5 in Schaffhausen that you should definitely do:

  • Munot Castle
  • Stroll through the old town
  • Münster church
  • Visit the Casino
  • Visit the weekly market

Things to enjoy on boat

Of course you have all the amenities as in a hotel. However, without direct noisy neighbors (unless the city youth happily walks by next to the ship). Double bed, coffee maker, an offered bottle of water and a bottle of wine. There are towels and toiletries in the toilet. A shower, however, you won't find. Therefore, I can not imagine to sleep several days on the ship without taking the offer in the hotel directly. For one night, however, it was quite enough for me.
On the deck, it has a cozy sitting area where it is relaxing to enjoy an evening. The water has a calming effect and the nearby train line with its freight traffic can be quickly faded out.

If staying on the boat wasn't enough for you; you get a voucher for a regular boat ride for the night. So if that doesn't sound like an adventure
